AMCAT Test Guide: Modules, Adaptive Scoring, Practice

AMCAT is an employability test for graduates and freshers in India, run by SHL, that companies use to shortlist candidates for interviews. You take compulsory modules in English, quantitative ability and logical ability plus a personality inventory, and choose two domain modules such as Computer Science or Automata Fix. The test is adaptive and has no negative marking, so the difficulty of the questions you get right matters more than the raw count.

What AMCAT is and who uses it

AMCAT was developed by Aspiring Minds, which is now part of SHL. The official site, myamcat.com, is operated by SHL (India) Private Limited and describes AMCAT as India's largest employability test, with more than 1,000 companies using it. Unlike a company-specific test such as the Tech Mahindra aptitude test, you take AMCAT once and your score can be considered by many employers. Your college may run it on campus, or you can book it yourself.

AMCAT is relevant for:

  • Engineering, MCA and BSc freshers targeting IT services and product companies.
  • BCom, BBA and MBA graduates targeting banking, finance, sales and operations roles.
  • Hospitality and pharmacy graduates, for whom there are dedicated domain modules.

Two practical rules from the official FAQ: AMCAT cannot be taken from home (only at colleges where SHL is running it or at SHL-designated centres), and the fee at the time of writing is listed as ₹900 plus taxes for an annual subscription, with charges for late rescheduling. Check myamcat.com for the current price before you pay, and pay only on the official site.

Modules and format

The official AMCAT syllabus lists the modules below with their question counts and durations. The FAQ describes aptitude (English, quantitative ability and logical ability) and the AMPI personality inventory as mandatory, while domain modules are optional and chosen according to your degree or the jobs you want.

Compulsory modules

Module Questions Duration
English 18 18 min
Quantitative Ability 14 20 min
Quantitative Ability (Tech) 16 20 min
Logical Ability 12 15 min
Information Gathering & Synthesis 12 15 min
AMPI (personality) 90 20 min

The syllabus lists two versions of quantitative ability. Which one you take depends on your test profile, so check the module list shown when you book.

The syllabus says you choose two domain-specific modules. A selection from the official list:

Module Questions Duration
Computer Science 20 20 min
Automata Fix 7 20 min
Financial Accounting 15 15 min
Marketing 16 15 min
Human Resources 15 15 min
Electronics and Semiconductors 12 15 min
Mechanical Engineering 12 15 min
Civil Engineering 40 25 min

Pick modules that match the jobs you are applying for. A CSE fresher aiming at IT services usually gains most from Computer Science and Automata Fix, while a BCom graduate is better served by Financial Accounting.

How adaptive scoring works

The AMCAT FAQ explains that the test gets harder or easier depending on your previous answer. A correct answer brings a harder question, and a wrong answer brings an easier one. Your score depends on the difficulty level of the questions you answer correctly, not just how many you get right.

Three consequences follow:

  1. There is no negative marking. The FAQ states this directly and expects you to attempt every question.
  2. Early questions matter. Getting the first few right moves you up to harder items, which carry more weight. Slow down slightly at the start of each module.
  3. Two candidates with the same number correct can score differently. The one who answered harder questions correctly scores higher.

Score reports and percentiles

AMCAT scores are first sent to you by email, along with a detailed feedback report that includes a "Job Match" section on your chances for different roles. The myamcat.com FAQ does not set out a percentile method, but candidate-shared score reports show module scores together with a percentile comparing you with other test takers. Treat any percentile you see quoted by coaching sites as their interpretation, and read your own report for the exact figures.

Companies shortlist you on several parameters, including scores in specific sections. If you take AMCAT more than once, the FAQ says the recruiter chooses which score to consider: some use the latest, others the best or the average. You can hide your scores, but then companies cannot shortlist you through AMCAT.

Retakes and validity

According to the official FAQ:

  • You can retake AMCAT 45 days after your last attempt.
  • A re-attempt means taking all mandatory sections again, not only the weak one.
  • Scores stay usable while your subscription is active.

Because companies may average attempts, sitting the test unprepared "just to see" can hurt you later.

Practice questions

These eight questions follow the style of the compulsory modules and two popular domain modules.

Question 1

English. Choose the word closest in meaning to "candid".

A. frank B. cautious C. hidden D. formal

Answer: A. Candid means open and honest. Cautious and hidden lean towards the opposite meaning.

Question 2

Quantitative ability. If A : B = 2 : 3 and B : C = 4 : 5, what is A : B : C?

A. 8 : 12 : 15 B. 2 : 3 : 5 C. 8 : 12 : 20 D. 4 : 6 : 5

Answer: A. Make B the same in both ratios: 2 : 3 = 8 : 12, and 4 : 5 = 12 : 15. So A : B : C = 8 : 12 : 15.

Question 3

Quantitative ability. What is the difference between compound interest and simple interest on ₹10,000 at 10% per annum for 2 years?

A. ₹100 B. ₹200 C. ₹210 D. ₹0

Answer: A. Simple interest = 10,000 × 10% × 2 = ₹2,000. Compound amount = 10,000 × 1.1 × 1.1 = ₹12,100, so compound interest = ₹2,100. The difference is ₹100.

Question 4

Logical ability. Statements: Some laptops are tablets. All tablets are phones. Conclusions: I. Some laptops are phones. II. All phones are laptops.

A. Only I follows B. Only II follows C. Both follow D. Neither follows

Answer: A. The laptops that are tablets must also be phones, so I follows. Nothing says every phone is a laptop, so II does not.

Question 5

Logical ability. Which number does not belong with the others?

A. 121 B. 169 C. 196 D. 221

Answer: D. 121, 169 and 196 are perfect squares (11², 13², 14²). 221 is 13 × 17, not a square.

Question 6

Information gathering and synthesis. Five files P, Q, R, S and T were uploaded one after another. R was uploaded first and S last. T was uploaded before P, and Q was uploaded immediately after P. Which file was uploaded third?

A. T B. P C. Q D. R

Answer: B. With R first and S fifth, T, P and Q fill positions 2 to 4. T comes before P, and Q directly follows P, so the order is R, T, P, Q, S. P is third.

Question 7

Computer Science. What is the time complexity of binary search on a sorted array of n elements?

A. O(n) B. O(log n) C. O(n log n) D. O(1)

Answer: B. Each step halves the remaining range, so the number of steps grows with log n.

Question 8

Automata Fix. This function should return true when n is prime, but it returns false for every input. Which change fixes it?

function isPrime(n)
    if n < 2
        return false
    for i = 2 to n
        if n mod i == 0
            return false
    end for
    return true
end function

A. Change "for i = 2 to n" to "for i = 2 to n - 1" B. Change n < 2 to n < 1 C. Return true inside the loop D. Start the loop at i = 1

Answer: A. The loop reaches i = n, and n mod n is always 0, so every number is reported as not prime. Stopping at n − 1 (or at √n) fixes it. Starting at 1 would make the problem worse.

Strategy and time management

Protect the first questions in each module. In an adaptive test, early accuracy sets the level of the questions that follow. Spend a little more time on the first three or four, then settle into your normal pace.

Never leave a question blank. With no negative marking, a guess can only help.

Choose domain modules strategically. A strong Computer Science or Automata Fix score helps more for IT roles than an average score in an unrelated module. If coding is weak, practise Automata Fix specifically: it is about reading and correcting existing code, not writing long programs.

Treat AMPI honestly. The personality inventory is not scored as right or wrong, and inconsistent answers to similar statements are more likely to look odd than any single honest answer.

Know the test centre setup. Since AMCAT is taken at a college or SHL centre, bring the ID and documents listed in your admit email and arrive early.

Common mistakes

  • Booking before preparing. With retakes only after 45 days and recruiters free to average scores, a weak first attempt can follow you.
  • Rushing the first questions of a module, which keeps you on easier items for the rest of it.
  • Picking modules at random. Match the domain modules to the jobs you want.
  • Ignoring Information Gathering & Synthesis. It is listed in the syllabus alongside the core modules, and ordering and data-sorting questions like question 6 are quick to learn.
  • Paying unofficial agents. Book and pay only through myamcat.com.

A three-week preparation plan

Week Focus
Week 1 English (vocabulary, grammar, reading) and quantitative basics: ratios, percentages, interest, time and work
Week 2 Logical ability (syllogisms, series, coding-decoding, arrangements) and information gathering puzzles
Week 3 Domain modules: Computer Science MCQs and Automata Fix debugging daily, plus two timed full-length mocks

For timed practice across all the compulsory areas, see our all test package. If you are comparing employability tests, our eLitmus test guide explains how the pH test differs, especially on negative marking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there negative marking in AMCAT?

No. The AMCAT FAQ on myamcat.com states that there is no negative marking and that candidates are expected to attempt every question. Because the test is adaptive, a wrong answer leads to an easier next question rather than a deduction.

Can I take AMCAT from home?

No. According to the AMCAT FAQ, AMCAT can only be taken in colleges where SHL is conducting it or at SHL-designated test centres. Remote testing from home is not offered.

How often can I retake AMCAT?

The AMCAT FAQ says you can retake the test 45 days after your last attempt, and that a re-attempt means taking all the mandatory sections again, not only the section you want to improve.

Which AMCAT score do companies use if I take it more than once?

The AMCAT FAQ says the recruiting company decides. Some look at your latest score, others at your best or your average, so every attempt matters.

What is a good AMCAT score?

SHL does not publish one universal cut-off. Each company sets its own requirement, often per section. Coaching sites quote percentile targets, but treat these as rough guides and aim to be strong in every compulsory module.
