What Is a Logic Grid Puzzle?

Setting Up the Grid

Step 1: Identify dimensions – What are you matching? People to jobs? People to cities? People to jobs to cities? List each dimension and its values.

Step 2: Choose grid orientation – Rows = one dimension, columns = another. For 5×5, you need 5 rows and 5 columns. Usually rows = people (or main entity), columns = attributes (job, city, etc.).

Step 3: Draw the grid – Create a table. Label rows and columns. Leave cells empty for ✓/✗.

Step 2: Process negative clues – "Bob is not the lawyer" → Bob row, lawyer column = ✗. Less informative but still useful. Eliminate.

Step 3: Process relational clues – "Carol sits next to the engineer." You need to link dimensions. If you know Carol's position and "next to" means something specific, you can deduce. Sometimes you need to combine with other clues.

Step 4: Use elimination – When a row has 4 ✗ and 1 empty cell, that cell must be ✓. Same for columns. Fill it. Use it to eliminate in other dimensions.

Step 5: Chain deductions – "Anna is doctor. Doctor lives in London. So Anna lives in London." Cross-reference grids. Build the full picture.

Step 6: Check for contradictions – If you deduce Anna is doctor and Bob is doctor, you've made an error. Backtrack. Re-check clues.

Step 7: Complete the grid – Keep going until every row and column has exactly one ✓. Done.

Grid Notation Tips

✓ and ✗ – Standard. ✓ = yes, this match. ✗ = no, not this match.

Numbers – Some solvers use numbers (1, 2, 3) when there are multiple possible matches. When only 1 remains, that's the answer.

Pencil – Use pencil. You might need to erase. Logic grids can have false starts.

Minimal marks – You don't need to fill every ✗. Focus on cells that matter. When a row has one empty cell, that's ✓. Mark it.

Common Clue Types

Direct – "X is Y." Immediate. Mark ✓ for X–Y, ✗ for all other X and all other Y.

Negative – "X is not Y." Mark ✗ for X–Y.

Work in bursts – One clue might trigger several deductions. Follow the chain. Then move to the next clue.

Cross-reference – When you have multiple grids (people×jobs, people×cities), use information from one to fill the other. "Anna is doctor. Doctor lives in London. So Anna–London ✓."
